20 Questions to Ask Your Father

share the gift of love

Almost every year I wonder what to get my dad for Father’s Day: golf clubs, movie tickets, dinner…  I am noticing a shift in me as I am getting older, ( I am almost 50!) and after my mother died one year ago, there is a tender ache in my heart reminding me how transient life is.  How much more important it has become to cherish every moment we can with our loved ones.

Action Plan:  Connect with dad, Skype, pick up the phone, or take some time out of the day & ask dad these questions:

Here are some of my fave’s:

1.  When you were a teenager, which family member did you go to for advice?  Looking back, was it good advice?

2.  Has anything ever happened at a family wedding that you’ll never forget?

(Being a foodie….)
3.  What is the best thing that your grandparents ever cooked?

4.  If you could go back to the one day in your childhood, which day would that be?  Why?

5.  What was the hardest thing you went through as a child?  How did you overcome it?

(Click here for more questions)

Happy Father’s Day to all you awesome dads!  xo

Taught by M&V member and mindfulness coach, Kimberly

LaRue, Mindfulness in the Holidays workshop is the perfect

break from the busy happenings of the holidays. Just

schedules and Kimberly can help give you tools to make it

less stressful.

Learn how to :

• Identify mental, emotional and physical stressors

related to the holidays

• How to work with loss and grief

• Cultivate gratitude and generosity practices

• Learn how to work with anxiety and expectations

just times of chores and drudgery. Mindful Holidays can be

a catalyst for creativity–the development of new rituals and

new possibilities.

One of the primary causes of nutritional imbalance is a lack of an essential human nutrient:  Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the act of paying full, nonjudgemental  attention to our moment-to-moment experience.  This workshop explores how we can use mindfulness to free ourselves from unhealthy eating habits and improve our overall quality of life.

Whether you are overweight, suffer from an eating disorder or just want to get more out of life, this workshop offers a simple tool that can make a remarkable difference.

This summer I helped in creating a pilot research program using Mindfulness for FAU’s Diabetes Education and Research Center (DERC) to educate children and their families
This program is managed by the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University.  The Diabetes Education and Research Center (DERC) provides support for children and adults who may be at risk for diabetes, have diabetes or are at risk of complications of diabetes.

Thanks to a grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Foundation, DERC is implementing their “Embracing a Healthy Tomorrow: Empowering Communities to Overcome Childhood Obesity” outreach effort to 1,400 children who are at-risk for obesity and diabetes and their parents via Palm Beach County-area schools, churches, community centers and youth programs. This summer we reached 350 children and adults.

The DERC efforts to prevent obesity and diabetes by reaching out to at-risk populations are well underway. This summer, we visited local day camps to advocate for healthy lifestyle changes. The above photo shows DERC staff member, Kimberly LaRue, leading a group of children in a mindfulness exercise.

“I want to tell you that what you’re looking for is already inside you.

You’ve heard this before, but the holy thing inside you really is that which causes you to seek it. You can’t buy it, lease it, rent it, date it or apply for it.

The best job in the world can’t give it to you. Neither can success, or fame, or financial security — besides which, there ain’t no such thing.”

- Anne Lamott, addressing a Stanford U. graduating class
